BIS Hallmarking

BIS Hallmarking is the official certification of gold and silver articles in India for purity and fineness, regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It assures that the jewelry or article conforms to the Indian Standard (IS) set by BIS, protecting consumers from fraud and substandard precious metal products.

Purpose of Hallmarking

  • To guarantee purity and fineness of gold and silver

Legal Basis

  • Governed by the BIS (Hallmarking) Regulations, 2018
  • Mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and gold artefacts is enforced in selected districts across India, with phased nationwide rollout
  • As of 2021, hallmarking is mandatory in over 250 districts and expanding

What is Included in a Hallmark?

Each hallmarked gold or silver item includes:

  • BIS logo (standard mark)
  • Purity/Fineness grade: (Gold: 22K (916), 18K (750), 14K (585)), (Silver: 999, 925, 875, etc.)
  • Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC) mark
  • Jeweller’s identification mark
